Angioplasty is a surgical process of opening clogged heart arteries, and it is also known as percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary angioplasty. Widening of the artery is done by inserting and inflating a tiny balloon temporarily. Furthermore, this surgical procedure is often combined with the placement of stent i.e. a small wire mesh tube. Stent assists in keeping the artery open, and reduces the chance of narrowing again.
Stents that are coated with medication help in keeping the artery open (drug-eluting stents), while some stents are not coated (bare-metal stents). The symptoms of blocked arteries such as shortness of breath and chest pain are improved after performing Angioplasty. Additionally, this surgery is also performed during a heart attack, i.e. to reduce the risk of heart damage and to open the blocked artery quickly.
