Hemoglobin Hb is a protein found in the red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to various parts of the body. This protein also transports carbon dioxide from around the body back to the lungs.
Hemoglobin is a combination of four protein molecules- two alpha-globulin chains and two beta-beta globulin chains. A hemoglobin Hb test is performed to measure the level of hemoglobin in the blood.
Low level of hemoglobin is the sign of a blood disorder and may cause symptoms like dizziness, exhaustion, and skin paleness, pain in the chest, rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath.
High level of hemoglobin in the blood is known as polycythemia. It is a blood cancer caused by the production of excessive amounts of red blood cells by the bone marrow.
Procedure of the Hemoglobin Hb Test
A blood sample is drawn from the vein inside the forearm and collected in a sterilized tube or vial and sent to the laboratory for test.
