HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that rapidly destroys the ability of the body to fight against infections and certain kind of cancers. It also weakens the immune system by infecting the count of white blood cells.
HIV Antibody and HIV Antigen (p24) helps to detect the presence of HIV antigen (p24) and/or HIV antibodies produced in response to an HIV infection in the blood.
In the initial few weeks, the presence of the virus and p24 antigen levels in the bloodstream can be high. It may either show no symptoms or may show flu-infection like symptoms at the beginning that settles after a week or two.
The doctor may advise undergoing the test if the person:
Had sex with an HIV-positive sex partner
Had unprotected sex with more than one partner since the last HIV test
Has used street drugs by injection, especially when sharing needles and/or other equipment
Had sex with anyone who falls in any of the above listed categories

It is advised to inform the doctor about any medication that the patient is taking.
It is recommended to restrict the consumption of alcohol before the test.
