Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme that is essential to convert sugar into energy for the cells in the body. It is present in tissues and organ of the body including; heart, pancreases, kidney, skeletal muscles, blood cells, and lymph tissue.
LDH is released into the bloodstream when a patient is ill or has any kind of minor injury. It is the time when the level of LDH rise in the blood.
If the level increases without any injury, then it may lead to chronic or acute cell damage. However, some additional tests should be done to find the main cause. Low LDH level in the body is considered normal and is not harmful to the body.
Procedure involved in Lactate dehydrogenase test
The surface or the area from where the blood is to be drawn is cleaned with the help of an antiseptic
The doctor wraps an elastic band around the arm to swell the vein
The doctor takes the sample of the blood by using a sterilized swab
The needle is inserted into the vein and then the nozzle is withdrawn
The specialist then applies a bit of pressure on the area for an easy flow of blood
Cotton or gauze is used to stop bleeding
Then the blood sample is sent to the laboratory
Why get tested?
Lactate dehydrogenase is performed to measure the LDH level in the blood. If the test results are positive and it shows a high level of LDH in the blood, then it indicates cell or tissue damage.
If in case, the LDH level is extremely high then it is a sign of multiple organ failure and is a serious health problem. The test is commonly done during the treatment of cancer.
It helps assess the body’s response to medicines and predict outcomes. High level of LDH in the body can be because of blood flow deficiency, muscle injury, sepsis, heart attack and liver disease.
This test includes
Patient must inform the doctor about current medicines, medical history, existing allergy or upcoming surgical treatment before going for the test
There are no certain limitations that the patients should exercise before the test
People should not take any medicines before the test
One should not take drugs or drink alcohol before the test
