Lipoprotein-A or Lipoprotein (a) or Lp (a) is a type of protein that the body uses to carry cholesterol in the blood. Lipoprotein-A consists of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) molecule with (Apolipoprotein (a)) protein attached to it. The test is helpful in evaluating the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). The amount of Lp (a) in the body is determined by the genes one inherits, and the amount of Lp (a) in the body is relatively constant throughout their life.
Why get tested?
This is test is prescribed in case of the following:
If an individual is at a risk of cardiovascular disease
If an individual is at a risk of coronary heart disease
If the person has a family history of CHD, stroke, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus
Increased and decreased levels of LDL and HDL, respectively
In case the person is a heavy or occasional smoker
This test includes

Lipoprotein (a) test does not require any special precautions to be taken before the test. However, this test is accompanied by lipid panel and the lab technician might ask the individuals to fast 9-10 hours before lipid panel test. Also, the lab technician or the doctor should be informed if any over the counter or prescribed medicines, herbal supplements or any vitamin supplements are being taken.
