Thyroid is the butterfly-shaped gland that is situated in the base of the neck. The surgical process of removal of a part or complete thyroid gland is known as Thyroidectomy. The main role of thyroid glands is to produce hormones that assist in regulating metabolism, i.e. burning calories and heart rate control. This surgical process is highly effective in treating various disorders such as goiter (noncancerous enlargement of thyroids), cancer and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). The reason for performing the surgery determines the amount of thyroid gland to be removed.
In case of partial removal of the thyroid gland (Partial Thyroidectomy), the thyroid is expected to function normally after the surgery. However, in the case of Total Thyroidectomy (complete removal of the thyroid), the thyroid’s natural function is replaced with various thyroid hormones and daily treatment.
