Tympanoplasty or eardrum repair is a surgical operation performed to restore the tympanic membrane, i.e. eardrum and/or the middle ear’s tiny bones. The eardrum perforation might be caused due to chronic infection or, most rarely, trauma to the eardrum.
The tympanic membrane comprises 3 layers, where the outer as well as inner layers are made up of epithelium cells. The defects present in the middle layer consisting of elastic collagen fibers results in the formation of perforations. While the small perforations get healed on an immediate basis, however, it’s not the same in case of larger perforations or inadequate blood supply or any kind of infection. Furthermore, the perforation may also cause due trauma like a slap on/near the ear, insertion of an object in the ear, or an explosion.
The surgery focuses on repairing a defect sited in the tympanic membrane by placing a graft - either lateral or medial to the tympanic membrane annulus. It is considered as the most effective and safe outpatient surgery that is performed to uproot the disorder from the middle ear. Further, it restores the functionality of the middle ear and improves hearing. Today, several surgical procedures and grafting techniques are performed by the surgeons. Moreover, the success of the surgery is measured on the basis of preoperative evaluation, improved intraoperative hemostasis, thoughtfully planned procedure, and the graft’s correct placement.
