About the test

The test is conducted to detect and diagnose microbial infections in the urinary tract. It is conducted by taking a urine sample which aids in identifying the infection causing microorganisms in the urinary tract.

Why get tested?

The test is conducted to detect urinary tract infection in case a person shows any of the following symptoms-

  • Painful urination
  • Discomfort and pain in the abdominal region and lower back
  • Fever
  • Frequent urination

What it measures?

The test helps in diagnosing Urinary tract infection (UTI). It also helps to ascertain whether the underlying cause of the infection is bacteria or yeast.

At times, it is advised to take a Urine Culture test alongside a susceptibility test.  This test also assists in determining the most appropriate course of treatment to be adopted for treating and eliminating the existing symptoms.

Preparations

·         There are no specific preparations to be done in case of Urine Culture.

·         However, it is advised to inform the doctor about the ongoing medicine and health supplements prior to taking the test. This is because intake of a few medicines may interfere with the test results.

·         It is advisable to wash your hands and genitals before collecting the urine sample.

·         The patient must refrain from urinating, in case the test requires a concentrated urine sample.
