What is National Digital Health Mission?
National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) is the former name of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). It is a government health initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2020 to provide the necessary support to develop an integrated digital health infrastructure in India. The mission was rolled out throughout the country on 27 September 2021.
As part of NDHM, every Indian citizen will get access to a digital health locker and will be issued with an Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA). The digital locker will enable users to store their medical records digitally and access them anytime anywhere. Moreover, they can also share their medical records with participating medical professionals and healthcare providers with a clear consent-based system.
Components of National Digital Health Mission

ABHA or Ayushman Bharat Health Account is a unique health id issued to identify people within the digital health ecosystem created under NDHM. It is created using a person’s mobile number/ Aadhaar card along with their basic details.
Healthcare Professionals Registry consists of a comprehensive list of all doctors and other medical professionals practising modern and traditional medicine. Only those registered under HPR will be a part of the NDHM ecosystem.
Health Facility Registry comprises of a repository of both public and private healthcare facilities across the country, such as hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, pharmacies, clinics, imaging centres, etc. Only healthcare facilities registered under HFR will be a part of the NDHM ecosystem.
Personal Health Records allows NDHM users to upload, store and manage their medical records digitally on a secure network. Once PHR gets activated for a user, any medical record created under his/her name is automatically stored there.
